3 Nabbed in Attempted Costco Burglary

Three suspects were involved in the plan, carried out during business hours, deputies say

An attempted burglary at a Poway Costco during business hours ended with three people in handcuffs, including a man who stole a car to get away, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department announced.

Deputies say two men, 29-year-old Donald Scudder and 24-year-old Travis Hallak, walked into the Costco on Tech Center Drive Thursday as 24-year-old Danielle Holmes waited in the car near an exit.

At 5:45 p.m., store security became suspicious of the men and called deputies for help.

After loading up a shopping cart, Scudder ran out of the warehouse store without paying for the merchandise, expecting to find Holmes waiting for him, sheriff’s officials say.

However, Holmes had driven away because she was afraid of being arrested, so Scudder found only deputies waiting for him outside. He was swiftly taken into custody.

Hallak, meanwhile, escaped from another entrance and stole a car to get away, according to the sheriff’s department.

Deputies caught up with the suspect, still driving the stolen vehicle, in unincorporated Lakeside and arrested him. Holmes was also taken into custody a short distance away from the Costco.

All three suspects were booked into jail on suspicion of commercial burglary and conspiracy to commit a crime.
