CHP: Sleeping Driver Slammed Into Big Rig; 3 Hurt

A nasty wreck during the morning commute sent three people to a local hospital and caused major delays for drivers trying to get to work Wednesday.

A truck driver fell asleep on southbound Interstate 5 just after 7 a.m. near Tamarack Ave, according to the California Highway Patrol. He drifted into the breakdown lane and slammed into a big-rig parked on the side of the freeway while the driver used his cell phone to get directions for his next drop off.

Both drivers were injured but the passenger in the first truck sustained the worst injuries when the two trucks collided.

The collision sheared off the side of one of the trucks and spilled its contents, which appeared to be furniture, all over the highway.

Traffic was backed up for miles on Interstate 5 from highway 76 to Carlsbad Village Drive. A SigAlert was issued. Traffic was also backed up on westbound highway 78 from Interstate 5 to El Camino Real.
