Vintage "Saturday Night Live" Episodes Returning to NBC

All hail the return of the Coneheads, Master Thespian, Debbie Downer, Pat, Katherine Gallagher and Hans and Franz.

To celebrate the late-night sketch show's 40th season, NBC is introducing "SNL Vintage," a weekly look back at iconic episodes from the show's hysterical history.

Starting Saturday September 27 at 10 p.m. ahead of the season 40 premiere episode, the network will re-air the 1975 installment featuring Richard Pryor as host and Gil Scott-Heron as the musical guest. Then on October 4, an episode from the 25th season with host Christopher Walken and musical guest Christina Aguilera will be shown.

Many fans will remember the Walken episode for the sketch in which Will Ferrell energetically proves there's always a need for "more cowbell." (Check it out above.)

Broadcast live from famed studio 8H in New York City's Rockefeller Center, "Saturday Night Live" is the most nominated television show in Emmy history with 187 nods, and helped the launch the career of some of entertainments biggest names including Dan Akroyd, Jim Belushi, Chevy Chase, Rachel Dratch, Bill Hader, Jon Lovitz, Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Mike Meyers, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Chris Rock, David Spade, Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Colin Quinn and Gilda Radner.

Season 40 of "SNL" kicks off with host Chris Pratt and musical guest Ariana Grande on September 27 at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Veteran performer Darrell Hammond will return to the show as announcer, replacing the late Don Pardo.

Along with new sketches come new cast members: Michael Che and Pete Davidson will appear alongside returning faces Kate McKinnon, Bobby Moynihan, Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant, Vanessa Bayer, Taran Killam, Jay Pharoah, Beck Bennett, Colin Jost, Kyle Mooney, Sasheer Zamata and Kenan Thompson. Che will sit opposite Jost at the Weekend Update desk.

The week after Sarah Silverman and Maroon 5 take the stage on October 4, with alum Bill Hader returning to the stage to host on Oct. 11.
