Bombastic but soft, the Lonely Wild’s forthcoming record wicks aggression while somehow building intensely fierce energy at the same time. It’s an emotional ride, and not necessarily a happy one, but it’s one you should take when the five-piece come to Soda Bar on Saturday, Oct. 3.
The Lonely Wild formed in Los Angeles in 2010, slowly adding members before releasing their debut effort a few years later. While they’ve opened for Lord Huron, John Doe and others, the release of this sophomore album marks a real driving effort to carve their own name into willing hearts.
“Chasing White Light” drops the day before the quintet hits San Diego, which doesn’t give you much time to commit the songs to heart -- but it doesn’t matter. This is approachable music for loving ears, a mix of harmonies and horns, strings and roll-step drum beats. There’s a pleading to it, sure, but the appeal is free from weakness or whine. With this, the Lonely Wild turn loss on its head, looking toward the new beginnings that each end inevitably gives way to -- if only we’re open to taking that first, heavy step.
