The San Diego County grand jury wants a better emergency system on Coaster trains.

The 19-member grand jury released a report Wednesday, criticizing the North County Transit District for lacking certain safety equipment, such as an emergency intercom system.

The district issued a response, saying the Coaster meets all federal safety requirements.

A 2008 law requires passenger cars to include an emergency intercom.

The last time the district purchased new Coaster cars was 2003.

The district plans to have a new wireless intercom system installed in all cars by the end of the year.
