Polee Returns For Aztecs, Sparks Win

Aztecs star back on the floor for first time since collapsing in December

It was a wonderful, and somewhat scary sight to see. San Diego State basketball forward Dwayne Polee returned to the court on Saturday night, nearly two months to the day after collapsing in a game at Viejas Arena.

Near the end of the first half of the Aztecs game at San Jose State, Polee checked in for his first game action since December 22 when he fell to the floor against U.C. Riverside. Polee was diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) and only recently medically cleared to play.

Polee played 13 minutes in the game and made one of his two shots, a 3-pointer. His stat line was not terribly impressive, but he gave the Aztecs a boost when they needed it.

At halftime, San Diego State trailed the Spartans 36-35. Keep in mind, San Jose State has won two games all season, and both of them came against schools that don't even compete at the NCAA level. In the second half, the Aztecs turned up their defensive pressure, allowing just 20 points, and ran away with a 74-56 win.

Winston Shepard led SDSU with 20 points. J.J. O'Brien had 15 points, making seven of his nine shots. The Aztecs have a 1.5-game lead in the Mountain West Conference with three games to play. They get a long break to get ready for Boise State's visit to Viejas Arena next Saturday.
