Running back Mike Tolbert was named the Chargers Offensive Player of the Year in 2011. He won't have a chance to defend his title.
The fan favorite agreed to a 4-year contract with Carolina on Monday. The Panthers will likely have Tolbert play mostly at fullback, handling the ball in short yardage and goal line situations.
Tolbert went to Coastal Carolina University so this is a homecoming of sorts.
The Chargers will sign or draft (or both) another backup running back before training camp begins. They're rumored to be interested in former Chiefs back Jackie Battle, among others.
San Diego also has Jordan Todman, a 6th round pick last season, in the mix.
