Sleet, Snow Fall in East County

Tuesday's storm system did what it was supposed to do

Sleet and snow created hazardous driving conditions along Interstate 8 in the East County.

NBCSanDiego received several reports of hail falling Wednesday morning from viewers in Lemon Grove, Lakeside and La Mesa.

A downpour left hail on La Mesa resident Sean Hillier's deck just before 7 a.m.

"We've lived in La Mesa nearly 12 years, and have only see this once before," Hillier said.

Beth Johnson posted on NBCSanDiego's Facebook page about "an awesome BURST of hail in Lemon Grove!!! Only lasted about 2 minutes but it was cool!"

Temperatures in the higher elevations dropped to the 30's Wednesday morning - just cold enough to create snow or sleet near Pine Valley and Descanso Junction.

The weather conditions delayed the start of the school day in Julian.

Tuesday's storm system did what it was expected to do. The system brought a few light showers and whipped up winds in the East County.

Winds in Borrego Springs reached 63 mph Tuesday evening while Harrison Park southeast of Julian reported 54 mph winds.

"We are in the clearing stages," said meteorologist Jodi Kodesh. "There will be sunshine in San Diego later Wednesday but the cold air will linger."

West of the mountains should see plenty of sunshine but grab a jacket as the temperatures will be cool, Kodesh said.
