Police Car Catches Fire on SR 163

Captured on camera: someone warning fire crews there was ammunition inside

A San Diego police car exploded into flames while traveling on a highway early Sunday.

The SUV was fully engulfed on State Route 163 near 10th Avenue around 1 a.m.

A police sergeant was returning from the San Diego Chargers game at Qualcomm Stadium in the department’s recruitment vehicle when the SUV caught on fire according to the news photographer covering the incident.

When San Diego firefighters arrive, someone on the scene can be heard warning them that the vehicle was a police car and that there was ammunition inside.

San Diego police could not confirm that live ammunition was inside the vehicle at the time.

Firefighters quickly got the fire under control but it appears the SUV was destroyed.
