Woman Accused of Murder in Logan Heights Deadly Street Fight

A couple who had been homeless after the closure of a seasonal shelter got into a deadly fight Sunday, officials said.

Sandra Mathis, 52, of San Diego was arrested Sunday on suspicion of murder just before 5 p.m.

San Diego Police say Mathis was involved in a fight with a man at the corner of Commercial Street and 19th Street in the Logan Heights area of the city.

The man who was involved in the fight was found in the street suffering from several stab wounds, police said. He was taken to UCSD Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Friend Kevin Wilson said the couple had been having problems after the Alpha Project tent was closed down on April 1.

“We all got kicked out,” he said. “We’re all on the street in one way or another.”

He talked about the victim whose name has not been released by authorities, describing him as a good guy who would give you the shirt off his back.

Anthony Terrell, a member of Calvary Baptist Church who has lived in the area for several months and said he often talks to those living on the streets.

He said the area has become very dangerous.

“It doesn’t seem like much down here but it’s almost like a lot of people that are down here don’t have a will to live,” Terrell said.

“People die down here all the time for nothing. It’s sad,” he said.

Mathis has been booked on a charge of murder and held at the Las Colinas Detention Facility.
