San Diego County has more than 3.3 million residents for the first time, according to a report released Monday by the Department of Finance.
The demographic report details the rise in population for the state of California from July 2015 to July 2016.
The state’s population grew by 295,000 to total 39.4 million people according to the state’s estimate. The data is pulled together through reports from the Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Health and the U.S. Census Bureau.
San Diego County is the second largest county in the state behind Los Angeles County. The nine largest counties - Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Clara, Alameda, Sacramento, and Contra Costa - make up 70 percent of the state’s population.
The department says net migration added 70,000 persons to California last year. That includes all foreign immigrants regardless of legal status, residents who left the state to live abroad, and the balance of people who move to and from the California from within the United States.
State officials estimate California’s population as a moderate .75 growth rate.

The department also says the birth rate declined to 12.42 births per 1,000 population from 13.69 births per 1,000 in the 2010 census.
As the Baby Boomer generation ages the death rate has slowly increased to 6.71 deaths per 1,000 population compared to a rate of 6.26 in 2010.
