Police Search for Suspect in Lemon Grove Attempted Carjacking

Deputies are searching for 54-year old Dexter Prewitt.

In Lemon Grove, deputies are searching for the suspect in an attempted carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon Tuesday.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDSO), 54-year old Dexter Prewitt allegedly attempted to steal the victim's car in the parking area of a strip mall.

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. on the 7900 block of Broadway in Lemon Grove.

In broad daylight, investigators and witnesses say Prewitt attempted to take the car and abduct the driver's wife and child.

But witnesses say the driver fought back before the suspect escaped on foot.

SDSO says the driver sustained a cut to his arm during the assault but declined to go to a hospital.

When deputies arrived, they set up a perimeter and began a building and property search to locate Prewitt.

At this time, he is still outstanding.

“My dad always says he doesn't feel safe here and that he would atcually like to move. This Lemon Grove area really isn't that safe," witness Francisco Palamino said. "I don't really care though. I feel like if somebody is going to do something bad they're going to do it anyway."

Prewitt is described to be around 6-feet tall, with salt and pepper colored hair. He had been wearing a faded yellow polo shirt and faded jeans with white tennis shoes.

SDSO says they not believe Prewitt is armed but say he may be assaultive.

Anyone with information is asked to call the SDSO non-emergency line at (858)565-5200.
