Woman Dead, Man Injured in Attempted Murder-Suicide

Police suspect this incident is an attempted murder-suicide

A neighbor reported a fatal shooting in Oceanside after he saw blood running under a bedroom door.

The man told 911 he heard gunshots inside a condominium at 4215 Vista del Rio Way just after 2 p.m. He had been in that condo earlier that day but left to take a shower next door.

When he returned, he saw the blood.

Officers found a woman and man, both in their mid-20s, on the floor. They each had gunshot wounds to the head, according to Oceanside Police Lt. Leonard Cosby.

The woman, identified by police as Kirsten Deanne Jelinski, was dead, but the man was still living. Paramedics took him to an area where a helicopter could airlift him to the hospital. He is currently on life-support. The couple were dating, officers believe.

Investigators suspect the shooting was an attempted murder-suicide, but they have not ruled out the possibility that it was a double homicide. Police are not releasing the man's name until his family is notified.

They have recovered a handgun at the scene. However, they have found no motive. Jelinski's father lived with the couple, but he was not home at the time, Cosby says.

Jelinski was an accomplished softball outfielder who played for Villanova University in Pennsylvania. She attended both Mission Hills and San Marcos high schools and earned three varsity letters in softball while also playing basketball and volleyball, according to Villanova's profile.

A nursing major, Jelinski has two siblings.
