A multi-vehicle accident temporarily closed lanes and caused heavy traffic on State Route 78, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident happened on SR 78 near Rancho Santa Teresa Drive at about 9:50 a.m., a CHP dispatcher said. According to the reporting party, there may have been four to five cars involved.

The accident blocked westbound lanes and both lanes were closed by CHP officials at 10:45 a.m.

The lanes reopened at 11:18 a.m., though a traffic advisory was still in effect due to backups in both directions.

Three tow trucks were used to clear the scene, the dispatcher said.

Information regarding the condition of those involved in the accident wasn't immediately available.
