Middle School Students Design El Cajon Skate Park

Students use interdisciplinary skills to design skate parks

More than 100 middle school students had the opportunity to design a new skate park at Montgomery Middle School in El Cajon.

On Wednesday morning, the Montgomery students showcased their designs as part of the Parks Build Community project to staff, fellow students and Superintendent David Miyashiro.

The project began in the beginning of the school year and has allowed students to use skills from various subjects, including English, math and engineering. This opportunity even allowed students to use 3D printers.

“This is a perfect project for showing what students are capable of when teachers are facilitators and learning is in the hands of students,” said one of the teachers leading the project, Amanda Plocinski. “We're not lecturing, we're providing tools and resources and expecting that students work in teams to get a project done."

This is the first time a project like this has been done at Montgomery Middle School.

"The reason to build this park is because it reduces crime by 50 percent," said student Skyler Archer. "Criminals don't go to places where there's people because they're scared they might get caught."
