6 San Clemente Hillside Homes Threatened By Mudslide

Fire officials responded Friday morning to reports of a landslide behind six houses in San Clemente.

A resident told the Orange County Register that the slide happened near 247 Via Ballena around 6 p.m. Thursday, but because of the darkness, the extent of the damage was not immediately visible.

"It was pretty dark last night and we didn't see the damage. We saw it this morning, and we were scared," Roshy Gill, who was staying with her parents in one of the homes, told the newspaper.

Six residences along a golf course were threatened by the slide and four were red-tagged, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Greg McKeown, adding some of the mud ended up on the course.

City officials will be managing the response from now on, McKeown said.
