Inmate Fight Breaks Out at South Bay Jail

A fight broke out between several inmates at the South Bay Detention Facility Wednesday night, officials from the San Diego Sheriff’s Department said.

The scuffle happened at around 9:20 p.m. It is unclear exactly what events may have led to the physical altercation.

Deputies verbally commanded the inmates to stop fighting and return to their housing cells, but the inmates allegedly ignored the orders.

Officials say deputies had to use less-lethal force to stop the fight. Once those involved returned to their cells, deputies evaluated the inmates for injuries.

Officials say one inmate sustained non-life threatening injuries from the fight and was transported to UCSD for treatment.

The suspects involved in the scuffle have not been identified, as the incident is still under investigation.
