Officer Involved in Head-On Collision in Lakeside

An off-duty officer was involved in a head-on collision in Lakeside, San Diego Police said.

Police said the officer has a possible broken collar bone as well as scratched and cuts to the face, but will be okay. The officer is in a lot of pain, police said, but should be released today.

The head-on collision happened in Lakeside Tuesday. Wildcat Canyon Road was closed near the 8-mile marker and Ak-Uunyaa Way.

Shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday, the 30-year-old male from Ramona driving a 2005 Nissan at a high rate of speed lost control of his vehicle and crossed the double yellow lines directly into the path of a Dodge Ram, California Highway Patrol said. The Dodge Ram, driven by a 33-year-old male from Ramona, struck to the right side of the out-of-control Nissan.

Both drivers were extracted from their vehicles by fire personnel. The California Highway Patrol and Heartland Fire both responded to the scene

The driver of the Nissan suffered major injuries and was airlifted to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, CHP said. The driver of the Dodge suffered major injuries and was taken to Sharp Memorial by an ambulance, CHP said, and a 28-year-old female passenger in the Dodge sustained minor injuries and was transported to Sharp Memorial.

One person from the car and two people in the truck were taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital by ambulance, according to fire officials. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

As of noon, the road was reopened, officials said.

The identity of the officer involved has not been released.

Officials are investigating the collision but said it does not appear alcohol or drugs were a factor.
