Gas Leak Forces Evacuations

A natural gas leak in Oak Park has forced evacuations in 22 residences, according to fire officials.

The incident happened around 9:20 a.m. at 2606 56th St. when a construction crew struck the line. It is a large diameter leak and could affect other locations, said the fire department.

San Diego Gas & Electric officials are working to fix the problem and are expected to have it replaced later this afternoon.

"Natural gas is explosive," said SDFD  Battalion Chief Dan Froelich. "If it finds an ignition source we could have a fire problem."

A church at corner of 56th Street and Seifert Street is serving as an evacuation point.
