100+ Car Windows Shattered in Chula Vista

A man who was shot by suspects sought in a vandalism crime spree considers himself lucky to be alive.

"I'm just really happy to be alive and that I was struck with a BB gun and not an actual firearm," the Chula Vista man told NBC 7.

Chula Vista police are looking for the people responsible for a vandalism crime spree that happened between Thursday night and Sunday morning on Chula Vista’s west side. (See map below.) According to police, the crooks smashed the windows of more than 100 vehicles.

Police said a man was also shot with an air gun during the crime spree. The shooting happened early Friday morning on East Prospect Street.

NBC 7 spoke with the victim who asked not to be identified in news reports.

"I was struck in the left shoulder," the victim said. "They released about 2-3 more rounds that did not hit me."

"As soon as the van came around the corner doing 15 mph, you get that bad gut feeling in your stomach especially if you've grown up in this type of neighborhood," he explained.

The victim told police he saw an older model green van, like a GMC Safari or Astro. Other witnesses described seeing the same van after vandalism incidents on different nights.
