In a passing conversation with a friend, I mentioned I would be checking out Timber Timbre tonight, and he corrected my pronunciation. "It's actually pronounced tim-ber tam-ber," he said. Then he told me how he lived in Canada and had been following the band for years. They were long-listed for the prestigious Polaris Prize, and the music is dark and invokes a sense of yearning but comes out on the other side with some beautifully orchestrated songs. Unless you already have tickets to the sold out Civil Wars show at Anthology, this is definitely your pick of the evening, as the band coheadlines with Marissa Nadler, who was recently named one of Spin's 5 Best New Artists for June. Fans of Mazzy Star or Neko Case will feel right at home with her gorgeous and haunting dream pop, and the visual landscape created by her vocals.
