Feeling culturally deprived? Or maybe you still need coaxing from the wintry cocoon of reality TV. This Sunday’s North Park Festival of the Arts will awaken the slumberous right side of the brain with art, music, dance, food, fresh air and sunshine.
An all day affair, in the cozy neighborhood streets of North Park… and there’s also the CityBeat Festival of Beers with 28 participating breweries (exhale).
Let’s talk the ridiculous amount of music going on, the Festival will encompass 4 music stages, with bands playing all day long. A myriad of musical delights ranging from mellow folk to exotic world performers, and local bands will set the soundtrack to the day. Look forward to catching Kill Me Tomorrow at 4.30 p.m. at the Bar Pink stage. KMT’s sound can be described as experimental with industrial rock and pop element, overall creative composition and solid vocals.
The Bar Pink stage is located within the Citybeat Festival of Beers (Ohio St. just north of University Ave), check out the Creepy Creeps (3.10 p.m.), if you like garage band style, punk with a playfully creepy vibe then come stomp around the pavement with these guys. Get to the Bar Pink stage early enough and catch The Drowning Men at (1230p) and The Underground Railroad to Candyland (150p).
Changing musical gears completely check out the World Beats Stage (Grim Avenue & University Avenue) and experience Punjabi Hip-Hop (no kidding) or perhaps Anatolian Greek Folk music, how about some Ghanaian music? Such a unique opportunity to get a taste of these cultures that unless you double majored in geography and anthropology, probably can’t point out their origin on a map.
The Beats and Eats Stage will have a wide range of music tastes- from the crash punk, to rock, folk, beatboxers, classic guitarists…uh! Literally too many to list, music starts at 10am.
Pace yourself, there is another stage for music. The Main Stage (30th Street & University Avenue) will showcase some great local bands, look forward to seeing Transfer, established local band voted Best Alternative Album in 06, for their LP Faded Signal and nomination for Best Rock Band in 07. Also among the bands playing at the Main Stage is the bluesy rock of The Tighten Ups, a big band fronted by big voice, will definitely be a fun one to watch as well.
The music is just a piece of the festival pie this Sunday, go check it out, quench your thirst for local color, and prime that pasty skin for summer! Entry into the beer garden starts at $30 (Opens at noon, closes at 6 p.m.) but otherwise it’s free to walk around the festival (10 a.m. - 6 p.m.).
