USD Earns Postseason Basketball Berth

Toreros accept spot in the CIT

Before the conference tournaments began University of San Diego Athletics Director Bill McGillis said he was committed to having his basketball team play in the postseason if it was invited. He’s living up to those words.

The Toreros accepted an invitation to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) on Saturday. They’ll host the University of Hartford on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. at Jenny Craig Pavilion.

A program has to pay host a game in this event. In 2017 that fee was reportedly $30,000.

The Toreros will be led by acting head coach Sam Scholl, who can make a strong case to be Lamont Smith’s permanent replacement if he takes the Toreros deep enough into the tournament. This is the second time USD has appeared in the CIT. They reached the 3rd round in 2015.

The CIT is made up of schools from “mid-major” conferences that will not play in the NCAA Tournament or NIT. It’s a single-elimination event with all games being played at on-campus sites.
