Its been over seven months since Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. He hasn't played since because of his knee surgery. Woods could defend his title in the Buick Invitational at Torrey in two weeks, but it doesn't seem likely.
"He has until a week from today, or next Friday, to enter the Buick," according to the tournament's Executive Director Tom Wilson. "I understand he's back to a regular practice schedule, and is playing a lot; there's no doubt we'd love to have him."
Both the courses at Torrey Pines look to be in terrific shape. While they played the South Course in the U.S. Open, the North Course was ripped apart in hosting the major championship.
"You'd never know it by looking," said Wilson. "Both courses won't be as dry or fast compared to the Open, but I think the golfers will like it."
They'll certainly enjoy playing the South Course as a par 72, compared to 71 for the Open. The controversial back tees on the par five, 13th hole will be used at least one day.
If Tiger Woods plays, ticket sales will improve. There's no question the economy has had an effect even on the PGA Tour.
"Even without Tiger, we still have Phil Mickelson and player of the year Padraig Harrington," Wilson said.
No matter how you look at it, Torrey Pines is ready for the Buick Invitational.
