Rodriguez Taken to Hospital After Reaction

Padres shortstop Luis Rodriguez had an allergic reaction Saturday to something he ate, sending him to the hospital.

The team said he was being held overnight for observation and was resting comfortably.

"It happened so fast," manager Bud Black said after San Diego's 10-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. "We didn't know what happened. He was having a difficult time breathing and his tongue was swollen."

Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson also sat out with a sprained left middle finger. Manager John Russell said Wilson will go on the DL on Sunday and infielder Brian Bixler will be recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis.

"The last couple of days I've started to do things differently to try to compensate for the pain, catching and fielding balls different ways," Wilson said. "But it got to the point where it's hurting and not getting better.

"I needed to get it some rest and hopefully the swelling goes down."
