Phils Outpitch / Outhit Padres

Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick gave up two second-inning runs, but that was all the offense the Padres could muster Tuesday night at Petco Park. Kendrick (7-4) threw eight innings of seven hit ball to get the win.

Padres starter Jason Marquis (9-3), who has pitched quite well of late, had an off-night.  His location was lacking and one big mistake cost the veteran right-hander. Domonic Brown hit a three-run homer off of Marquis in the third inning to give the Phillies a lead they would never relinquish.

The Phils added on three more runs in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. That's how it ended. There was no late inning magic for the Padres on this night. Fortunately for the Friars Arizona, Colorado and San Francisco also lost. The Padres remain tied for second in the NL West, three games behind the division leading Diamondbacks.

The rubber game of the series is Wednesday night.
