Old, Dead Guys Rule

Long, long, long boards are returning to the surf, according to a published report.

Some San Diego surfers -- and others around the globe -- have started riding large finless wooden boards that gave birth to surfing thousands of years ago, , the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. The huge boards, which can be 10 feet or longer and weigh more than 100 pounds, are called alaias. The trend is not the only retro surf fad, either; according to the paper: "longboards, twin-fins, single fins and five fins, quad fins and finless boards from nearly every era in surfing's history."

"When paddling out and waiting for waves the board feels more akin to a sinking ship ... there's no fin, no foam, and no rocker to filter the experience," surfer Cyrus Sutton told the paper.

Patagonia Cardiff-by-the-Sea has sold a dozen of the $595 boards in six weeks, the paper reported.
