Eckstein a Workaholic

It was the Padres first full squad workout in spring training, and a chance to see second baseman David Eckstein at work  for the first time.

"I've got a routine," said Eckstein.  "It's just a lot of hard work, and something I've been doing since getting to the big leagues."

If younger players learn anything from Eckstein, it'll be how he approaches the game.  He isn't the biggest player in the majors, or the best.  But his work ethic could be the best.

"He's a tough little guy," said manager Bud Black.  "You'll enjoy watching him play."

"Eck" is most well known for playing shortstop.  He was a World Series MVP at that position for the Cardinals.  But after going back to second base with Toronto a little bit, he looks forward to playing it full time for the Padres.

"It's my natural position, and comes easy to me," added Eckstein. "Because of that I don't worry about a transition to moving there."

A .265 hitter, he really looks forward to hitting in Petco Park.

"With the big gaps that place is made for me," claimed Eckstein.

The Padres will have six days of workouts in Peoria, Arizona before opening their exhibition schedule next  Wednesday in the annual charity game against the Seattle Mariners.   You can bet you'll see David Eckstein in the lineup.
