stood next to a former opponent in the mayor's race Wednesday afternoon to announce a surprising collaboration and a new education plan.

DeMaio and District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis will be "teaming up" on a plan to improve San Diego's public schools, now dubbed the “Clean and Safe Schools” initiative.

The plan has three goals: to make every school “clean and safe,” to restore after school programs and generally to make the city more involved in education discussions

Dumanis, who did not secure enough votes in June to continue to the general election, will help implement the plan, DeMaio announced Wednesday. He said he will consult Dumanis and other members of the city when making public safety and education reform efforts.

Dumanis released an education plan early in her run for mayor. Her plan involved adding four members to the San Diego Unified School District's board of trustees, opposing new tax hikes and adding a new Independent Financial Advisory Board.

Dumanis announced her plan just days after her office cracked down on several allegedly corrupt Sweetwater school officials. It was the first time in this election cycle that a candidate for mayor suggested city involvement with state-run schools. The subject has become a trend among candidates since then.

DeMaio's opponent U.S. Rep. Bob Filner also announced his multi-step goal to reforming education from City Hall last month.
