A Republican congressman in California says he won't seek re-election next year.
U.S. Rep. Paul Cook says he will run for a seat on the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors in 2020. The former state assemblyman was first elected to California's 8th Congressional District in 2012.
Cook began his political career on the Yucca Valley Town Council, saying in a news release he wants to return to local government to fight state and federal bureaucracies.
California's Republican Congressional delegation has dwindled, with Republicans holding seven of the state's 53 U.S. House seats. But the district is likely a safe Republican seat. Donald Trump won the district with more than 54% of the vote in 2016.
Republican state Assemblyman Jay Obernolte says he will seek to replace Cook in Congress.
