Egypt: Constitution Changes Pass in Referendum

The votes are in. Egyptians took to the polls in massive numbers Saturday and overwhelmingly supported the lifting of constitutional restrictions on civil liberties. People formed long lines outside polling centers to vote freely for the first time in more than 50 years. In the wake of President Hosni Mubarak's resignation on Feb. 11, the vote will determine whether Egypt will hold parliamentary and presidential elections soon, or whether the military's power should be temporarily extended. Likely presidential candidate Mohamed ElBaradei says more time is needed for newly formed political parties to prepare for elections. According to Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram, ElBaradei was attacked as he tried to vote.
