Final Races Run at Historic Hollywood Park

The 75-year-old park will make way for a new housing and retail complex

The horses ran their last race at Inglewoodโ€™s historic Hollywood Park on Sunday.

A new housing and retail complex is scheduled to be built in the space where the 75-year-old park currently stands.

The track, once a fixture for famous movie stars and prize horses, has limped along as the times have changed.

Marti Shoemaker, a longtime employee at the track, said factors such as satellite broadcasting, casinos and the rise of internet gambling helped seal the fate of the race track.

โ€œPeople want to move at a faster pace now,โ€ Shoemaker said.

Highlighting closing day was the King Glorious Stakes, which is the programโ€™s most lucrative at $200,000.

The 238-acre site taking the park's place will include a 16-screen movie theater, sidewalk cafes and fine dining restaurants, according to the Hollywood Park Tomorrow website. The space will also be home to four parks and a collection of townhomes, condos and senior houosing.
