Tritons Host NCAA Basketball Tournament

Tritons earn top seed in West Regional of 64-team field

Playoff basketball is returning to San Diego.

The U.C. San Diego Tritons, winners of both the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular season and tournament championships, earned the top seed in the 2017 NCAA Division II West Region Championship.

That means the Tritons will get to host the regional at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla, a spot where they went 13-2 this season. UC San Diego is making its third appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament and is hosting for the first time.

The tournament starts on Friday, March 10 with four games. The Tritons open up with the 8th-seeded Dixie State Trailblazers Here’s the full schedule:

1. No. 6 Chico State (23-7) vs. No. 3 Western Washington (25-5) - 12 p.m.
2. No. 7 Sonoma State (20-8) vs. No. 2 Hawaii Pacific (28-2) - 2:30 p.m.
3. No. 5 San Francisco State (25-5) vs. No. 4 California Baptist (25-4) - 5 p.m.
4. No. 8 Dixie State (19-8) vs. No. 1 UC San Diego (25-5) - 7:30 p.m.

Semifinal games will be held at 5:00 and 7:30 on Saturday with the title game on Monday night at 7:30. The winner of the West Regional goes to the Division II Elite 8 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

On the women’s side the Tritons earned the 4th seed in the West Regional and will travel to Anchorage, Alaska to face Simon Frasier in a quarterfinal game on Friday night.
