Foster Mom Found Guilty of Stealing Toys From Tots

Virginia Kelly

A woman accused of hoarding and selling thousands of donated toys intended for San Diego kids was found guilty of grand theft on Friday

Virginia Kelly, 75, was charged with grand theft and embezzlement for allegedly hoarding toys meant for Toys for Tots, the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation, and several other non-profit organizations.

Police said she took more than $200,000 worth of toys meant for underprivileged kids and planned to sell them and keep the cash.

"Stealing from a charity and depriving needy children in San Diego of the chance to get a new toy is despicable,” District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said after Kelly's arrest. "This criminal investigation has identified someone who brazenly took advantage of the community’s goodwill and trust for many years."
Kelly's lawyer, however, said she is an advocate for foster children and their families.
