Teachers, District Battle Over Budget

Already hit hard by state budget cuts, teachers and nurses in the Sweetwater Union High School District are preparing to fight against more cutbacks.

The district planned to meet Monday night to vote on budget cuts that could eliminate staff positions. The vote was scheduled for last week but had to be delayed after a large crowd showed up to protest the cuts.

The district has until March 15 to notify teachers if there is a chance their position will be eliminated.

In other education news, hundreds of college students swarmed the state capitol Monday in a protest over what they called the death of higher education in California.

The students staged a mock funeral. They were supporting the College Affordability Act, which would freeze tuition for five years for all students attending the university of California or any Cal State university campus.

The act would also mean higher taxes for some Californians.
