A young man who fell asleep at the wheel suffered serious head injuries early Sunday when his car crashed in Rancho Penasquitos, a San Diego police sergeant said.
The single driver, in his twenties, whose name was withheld, was driving northbound just before 3 a.m. in the 9700 block of Carmel Mountain Road when his vehicle collided with the center divide and a boulder, causing it to flip over and skid, Sgt. Ray Battrick said.
Firefighters had to cut the man from the car, and he was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Battrick said.
Alcohol was not a factor, the sergeant said.
The 9700 block of Carmel Mountain Road was shut off for a few hours as officials worked to clean up the accident.
