A Poway man was killed Sunday while riding a dirt bike in the Ocotillo area of Borrego Springs, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Gary Schultz, 56, was found on the side of Split Mountain Road by campers riding motorcycles just after 9 a.m.
They called for paramedics who pronounced Schultz dead at the scene.
Officials said it appears Schultz had left his campsite and was driving on the road when he lost control, drove left of center and struck a sand berm. He was thrown from the dirt biked.
The area of the crash was south of State Route 78 and the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area.
