Burglar Steals Gun From Home, Prompts School Lockdown

A burglar stole a gun from a home in San Marcos Thursday afternoon, prompting a two-hour lockdown of a nearby elementary school, officials confirmed.

The lockdown began around 2:20 p.m. at Paloma Elementary School in the 1100 block of Calle Emparrado.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said a burglary suspect stole a handgun from a home in the area and then hid in some bushes.

The school was placed on lockdown as a precaution as deputies surrounded the home where the suspected burglary occurred. The suspect managed to escape from police and was not immediately located.

No injuries were reported and the lockdown was eventually lifted.

Editor's Note: The San Diego County Sheriff's Department confirmed the burglary suspect was not taken into custody. During the incident officials reported he had been caught, but later said that was not the case.
