A man died after U.S. Border Patrol agents say he sped away from a checkpoint in Jamul and collided with two other cars.
The crash happened on State Route 94 and Melody Lane at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Border Patrol agents say prior to the accident, they ordered the driver of a black Toyota Camry to pull over for a secondary inspection at the State Route 94 checkpoint east of Jamul.
Instead, agents say the 34-year-old man sped away from the checkpoint.
Border Patrol agents followed the man, but they aren’t calling it a high-speed chase.
“Our agents were not pursuing this vehicle or attempting to pull it over. They didn’t have their emergency lights on behind that vehicle. They were just attempting to follow that vehicle to find out where it went,” Agent Michael Jimenez said.
The man was driving recklessly and collided into two other cars approximately three miles west of the checkpoint, according to CHP.

Both female drivers had minor injuries. One was transported to a nearby hospital.
The male driver died on the scene after the second impact.
Border patrol agents say they’re investigating the driver’s residency status, as well as why he was stopped for a secondary inspection. They also can’t say if they found anything illegal in his car.
CHP can’t say if the driver had any alcohol in his system but they will perform a toxicology test.
The victim’s name has not been released.
