A man is in critical condition after being shot by a San Diego police officer at a Mira Mesa shopping center.
A patrol sergeant opened fire around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday outside the CVS pharmacy located at the corner of Mira Mesa and Camino Ruiz.
According to police officials, the sergeant from Northeastern Division was driving through the when he spotted two men wearing dark, hooded clothes headed toward the pharmacy.
When the sergeant stopped to talk to the men one went into the pharmacy while the other suddenly ran.
The sergeant chased the man and that's when the suspect turned and pointed a handgun at him, according to investigators.
The sergeant opened fire hitting the suspect once. That man, identified by the Associated Press as 22-year old Robert McBride, Jr., had surgery and was last reported to be hospitalized in critical condition.
The officer wasn't injured, in fact, it appears the suspect may have been holding a fake gun.

“It appears to be a replica gun at this time, we don't know that for sure,” said SDPD Capt. Jim Collins. “We haven't been up close enough to examine that yet."
We still don't know why the men ran from police when the officer tried to stop them. Investigators are questioning the man who ran into the pharmacy.
Police investigators worked through the night in the Mira Mesa shopping center to try and piece together what led up to the shooting. They took pictures and searched for evidence.
No word on just how long the scene will be cordoned off. With the CVS, VONS grocery store and other shops, it is a highly frequented area.
