Magnitude-3.1 Earthquake Strikes Outside Pine Valley

No damage has been reported

If you woke up to some shaking overnight in the East County, you may have felt the waves of an earthquake that struck outside of Pine Valley.

The magnitude-3.1 quake shook up the area about 15 miles northeast of Pine Valley and 28 miles east of Alpine just after 2 a.m. Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The temblor comes just days after the USGS released new insights on our nation’s earthquake hazards.

According to experts, 42 states are at risk for some earth shaking, while 16 of those states—including California – have a relatively high chance of experiencing damaging earthquakes.

“In California, earthquake hazard extends over a wider area than previously thought,” the report says.

Recently discovered faults raised the earthquake risk estimates in San Diego, San Jose and Vallejo.
