Two men blown out to sea in kayaks are rescued after calling lifeguards with a waterlogged cell phone.

David McClurg and his son David were fishing out of kayaks about 1 mile off the coast of La Jolla Shores on Monday at about 8:30 a.m. when they were pushed farther out by offshore winds. Before long, the McLurgs were 2 miles out to sea.

The younger McClurg said the water was very choppy, and he got turned sideways and was flipped out of his kayak, losing his oar in the process. He righted his kayak and jumped back in. He looked in the kayak compartment for his cell phone to call for help, only to discover it was full of water. He called 911 but the signal was dropped partway through the call.

Lifeguards, however, got the message and went out to the men, stowing their kayaks and bringing them back to shore unharmed.

One of the men said he called the small craft advisory line prior to going out and was told that the waves at La Jolla Shores were only 1 to 2 feet. Farther out, though, they were much bigger, he said.

The McClurgs said they didn't catch any fish while they were out.
