After falling behind 2-0 early the San Diego Padres pitching staff held the Dodgers scoreless. Clayton Richard and two relievers combined on a five hitter. Chase Headley homered and doubled to drive in three Padres runs as the last place Padres beat the first place Dodgers 4-2 Wednesday afternoon at PETCO Park.

It didn't look good early for Richard. The Padres lefty, who had lost his five previous starts, gave up two first inning runs after only four batters. But Richard dug in and gave the Padres seven solid innings to get his second win of the year. Over his career Richard is 6-1 against the Dodgers.

Headley was the offensive hero. He hit a solo homer in the first off of Dodger starter Chris Capuano then added a two run double, again of Capuano, in the sixth.

The Padres didn't play like the team that leads the league in errors. Chris Denorfia made two fine grabs in right field. James Darnell, an infielder who got a spot start in left field, came up with a diving catch in the ninth to help Dale Thayer get his fourth save of the year.

The Padres play one more against the Dodgers Thursday then open up a three-game weekend series at PETCO against the Angels.
