Several Fires Burn Along Riverbed in Lakeside

Four spot fires were burning in the riverbed, according to fire officials.

Several fires scorched the area along a riverbed in Lakeside Wednesday, producing a large cloud of smoke visible from La Mesa and Santee.

Cal Fire and Heartland Fire Department personnel were called to 13115 Willow Road just before 10 a.m.

As of 10:20 a.m., two acres along Ashwood Street between Mapleview and Willow Road, Cal Fire officials posted to Twitter.

No structures were threatened and no evacuations were in place.

By 2 p.m., firefighters had contained the fire.

Ashwood Street was closed to traffic between Willow and Mapleview. 

NBC 7's Whitney Southwick said the weather conditions were favorable for firefighters with calm winds and temps near 78 degrees. The humidity was at 46 percent.

"We're starting to burn at this point," a Cal Fire spokesperson said. "The fires are really starting to become an issue on a daily basis, sometimes multiple times a day."

The location was near the intersection with Wildcat Canyon Road, north of El Capitan High School and the Lakeside Rodeo Arena.
