Cases of Whooping Cough Decline in County

San Diego schools see no new cases of whooping cough

The school year is off to a healthy start.

San Diego schools reported no new cases of whooping cough in the past three weeks, according to the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA).

So far, there have been 353 cases of whooping cough in San Diego this year. Last year saw a record number of cases, two of which resulted in infant deaths.

Whooping cough, otherwise known as pertussis, starts with a persistent cough and runny nose. It escalates into rapid coughing fits characterized by a “whopping” sound. Some develop a mild fever. It is treatable with antibiotics, according to the HHSA.

The HHSA attributes a new state law for the decline in incidences of whooping cough. The law, AB 354, requires students in grades seven through 12 to show proof of their Tdap vaccinations before they can attend class.

HHSA will hold a whooping cough booster clinic to help students meet the new state law. The clinic will take place on Sept. 12 from 3 to 7 p.m. at HHSA Rosecrans, 3851 Rosecrans St., San Diego. There are 500 doses available.
