A local high school coach was arrested Tuesday, accused in the shooting death of a man in San Diego's Bay Park neighborhood.
Robert Howard Colegrove, 45, was found dead in the backyard of a Bay Park home Tuesday afternoon, officials said. Hours later, Jeret Needham, 42, surrendered to police and was arrested in connection with the shooting.
The deadly shooting was first reported around 2:35 p.m. in the 2200-block of Denver Street. It happened about a block away from Bay Park Elementary School, which briefly went into lockdown.
When officers arrived at the scene on Denver Street, they found Colegrove suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to the torso. Emergency medical crews pronounced him dead at the scene.
Needham fled the area immediately after the shooting and made his way to a home in the 4600-block of Firestone Street in Clairemont.
Police tracked Needham's whereabouts and dozens of officers then surrounded the Clairemont home.
About three hours later, Needham surrendered in front of cameras and police officers.
Officials said the suspect and the victim were acquaintances.
"We believe about an hour before the murder occurred there was a confrontation between the victim and the suspect," said Lt. Mike Hastings with SDPD Homicide. "Again we're still trying to confirm what that confrontation was and hopefully we'll have answers for that here within the next few hours."

Multiple people who know Needham, including a student, told NBC 7 that he coaches wrestling at Madison High School.
Police will not give any other information about Needham at this time, but the school's website does list Jeret Needham as its head wrestling coach.
Needham has been booked into jail on a first-degree murder charge and is scheduled to appear in court Friday.
