San Diego native Adrian Gonzalez was released Sunday by the New York Mets.
The Eastlake High School alum and former Padre All-Star was hitting .237 with six home runs in 54 appearances this season.
In an April appearance at Petco Park, Gonzalez ripped a two-run double and a three-run home run, upping his totals to 65 home runs and 235 runs batted in the ballpark, easily the most of any player in the park's history.
Gonzalez, who has been battling back issues for several years, was traded from the Dodgers to the Braves before joining the Mets.
In 14 years playing in Major League Baseball, Gonzalez has won four Golden Gloves and is a 5-time All-Star player.
