Thousands Shop at a Special Store

Thousands of North County residents will receive gifts, clothing, food, even blankets this weekend through a special giveaway on the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

The Annual Holiday Baskets program kicked off Friday at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. More than 1,600 volunteers work for all year planning the event and spend nearly a month transforming a building the size of a football field into a shopping mall.

Families lined up before the gates opened Friday afternoon. Organizers expect 5,000 people to benefit from the giveaway. Each family will get a shopping cart and walk through the building picking up elements to help out this holiday.

On Saturday and Sunday, the program runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This event, the largest holiday distribution program of its kind in the county, is sponsored by the Community Resource Center.

If anyone is interested in helping out donations will be accepted through December 21st. They still need non-perishable food, new or gently used blankets, new or gently used jackets/coats or new toys and teen gifts.
