The Spirit of a Surfer

Officials will dedicate an 18-foot-tall sculpture of a surfer in Imperial Beach Saturday.

The sculpture titled, "The Spirit of Imperial Beach," is meant to honor the city's surfing culture and the lifeguards who protect the beaches, according to the Port of San Diego.  The bronze statue, which features a surfer and his longboard, is being installed at the end of Palm Avenue.

It was created by the late artist A. Wasil, a resident of Coronado and a San Diego State University graduate who later went on to teach at both SDSU and San Diego City College, according to the port.

The sculpture is part of a $3 million public works project to spruce up the west end of Palm Avenue sponsored by the Port of San Diego and Imperial Beach.
