Suspected Drunk Driver Slams Into Police Car

A suspected drunk driver slammed into a parked police car in San Ysidro Sunday night.

At the time of the accident, the officer was out his car giving a citation to another driver.  The officer was not injured. It happened just before 7 p.m. Sunday night on the East San Ysidro Blvd on-ramp to Interstate 805, police said.

The officer was writing a ticket to a woman who was driving without her headlights on. That's when the officer said he heard a loud crash. "This car just came barreling up the ramp here, plowed into the rear of his car and fortunately, he was outside of his vehicle and it just scared the heck out of him," said San Diego police Sgt. Jim Reschke.

Airbags prevented the suspect from serious injuries. He was taken to a local hospital and administered a blood test to verify his blood alcohol content, police said.

The force of the accident pushed the police car 20-feet into the back of the original car, who's driver was being cited. The driver complained of minor neck pain.
